Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund admits the club are in a “crisis” following their sixth defeat of the season. The summer signing scored twice against Galatasaray on Tuesday but that wasn’t enough to even claim a point in the Champions League clash as the hosts were booed off at Old Trafford.

United led twice against the Turkish giants, including in the 67th minute thanks to a fine solo goal from Hojlund. But the visitors equalised for a second time before the game turned on its head.

The Red Devils were reduced to 10 men after Casemiro was sent off and Mauro Icardi, who had missed the resulting penalty, scored the winner with nine minutes of normal time remaining. United have now lost their opening two matches in the Champions League, alongside four defeats in their first seven games in the Premier League.

Hojlund says the squad must stick together in what he labelled as a “crisis”. Asked what can be done to improve United’s fortunes, the 22-year-old told CBS Sports: “It’s hard to tell.

Right now we need to improve together and stick together and that’s the only way we can get out of this crisis.

“You can say [it’s a lack of confidence]. I think it’s about being proud and fighting for the badge and we need to deliver more, deliver more to our fans and give more back to the club.”

It wasn’t the first time United have been booed off by their own fans at home this season. Manager Erik ten Hag understands the reaction and is determined to turn things around as soon as possible.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. They can expect, I am responsible for this team, for the performance, for the result, together with my squad and in this moment we don’t get the results and they are disappointed, I can understand.

“We have to do better, but as I said I have seen a team with a great spirit, and also a team was backed by a crowd from the start to the end and, in the end, the fans are disappointed, as we are, but it has to be fuel.

“That is the good thing for this team: every time they find energy, every game, every start of the game, there was a team with a lot of energy and with a good motivation to go into the game.”
