Mason Greenwood’s club Getafe have announced they will be making a change to the name of their stadium following complaints of sexism. The La Liga outfit’s home is currently named the Coliseum Alfonso Perez after sexist comments were allegedly made by former footballer, who never actually played for the club. And now they have moved to distance themselves from his name in light of his recent public comments.<\/p>\n
The 16,500-capacity stadium opened in 1998 and is owned by the Getafe council. And along with the club, they released a joint statement to reflect the change of the venue’s name after Perez made derogatory comments about women’s football.<\/p>\n
Perez had claimed the women’s football could not be compared ‘in any sense’ to the men’s game due to the monetary factor.<\/p>\n
Following pressure from the Getafe mayor, Sara Hernandez Barroso of the\u00a0Spanish Socialist Workers\u2019 Party, to change the name, the Madrid-based club announced on Wednesday the stadium will be renamed the Coliseum from now on.<\/p>\n
READ MORE <\/strong> Inside Mason Greenwood to Getafe as Man Utd star enjoys luxury treatment[REPORT] <\/strong><\/p>\n The joint statement read: “The ex-footballer [Perez] pointed out the impossibility for a female player to earn the same as her male partners, transferring the idea of football as a mere economic business, instead of extolling such important aspects of sport as self-improvement, effort or equality; minimising the social achievements obtained by the current world champions on and off the pitch.”<\/p>\n Perez, who played for Real Madrid and Barcelona in his career before retiring in 2005,\u00a0earlier told Spanish publication\u00a0El Mundo: “Women\u2019s football and men\u2019s football cannot be compared at all because everything depends on the income you generate and the media impact.<\/p>\n “I\u2019d like to earn what Cristiano Ronaldo earns, but I\u2019m not that good. It is what it is. It\u2019s good that they ask for what they consider, but the national team is above everything.”<\/p>\n Greenwood joined Getafe on loan from Manchester United on transfer deadline day and has made four appearances for the Spanish side.
