Jamie Carragher caught Micah Richards with a verbal low blow after Kieran Trippier made the former Manchester City man feel guilty.

Before Newcastle United’s Champions League clash against PSG, the England international spoke to Richards, the Liverpool legend and ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. At the start of the chat, Richards asked Trippier about his transition from floundering in City’s academy to walking out with the Magpies in Europe’s elite club competition.

However, before the beloved pundit could finish his question, Trippier decided to bring up a past pain Richards may not have realised he inflicted

Richards began the exchange by saying: “Can I just talk about the transition because, obviously, we were in the academy at Manchester City together.” Trippier then interrupted, saying: “I didn’t make it because of you.”

After the funny exchange ended, Schmeichel had his own bone to pick with Richards. He asked England’s youngest ever defender: “You were competing against him in the academy. How come he is there and you are here?”

Richards replied: “Because I burst on the scene.” Seconds after Richards finished his sentence, Carragher quickly said: “Then went flat.” After all of those on the screen burst into laughter, Richards opted to wear his career struggles as armour by going down the self-deprecation route.

“I was like a fizzy drink,” he laughed. "I was good for the first bit and then just fizzled out." Schmeichel then added to Richards’ woes by saying Richards was like a “shaken fizzy drink.”

He may not have quite achieved everything that was expected, but Richards still won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup. He also won 13 international caps for England, but never got the opportunity to play in the World Cup or the European Championships.

However, he was part of the historic Team GB team that played in the home 2012 Olympic Games, alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy.
