Newcastle’s first home Champions League game could have arguably not gone any better as they brushed past Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain and made Kylian Mbappe look rather ordinary in a memorable night under the lights at St James’ Park. Miguel Almiron, Dan Burns and Sean Longstaff gave Newcastle their first win of this year’s Champions League as Newcastle kept PSG’s plethora of attacking talent at bay. Express Sport picks out four things learned from Newcastle’s 4-1 win over PSG.

There were some spectacular pictures during the game of different generations celebrating together. The older generation with tears in their eyes at seeing their club return to the promise land and the younger generation witnessing it for the very first time. The atmosphere inside St James’ Park reflected the momentous occasion throughout the match and the whole city seemed to erupt when Almiron smashed in the opening goal.

PSG were shell-shocked and had no answer in the first half as Dan Burns doubled Newcastle’s lead before the break. Fellow Geordie Sean Longstaff then got on the scoresheet to make it three and all but seal victory. Failing to keep a clean sheet against one of Europe’s top sides won’t take the gloss away from what was a memorable night in Newcastle’s history.

While all the credit goes to Eddie Howe for getting his tactics right and the players stepping up to the occasion, there were some calls that went their way in the match. VAR was always going to be under the spotlight this week following the disaster from the weekend and that’s possibly why the check for Burn’s goal went on so long.

The right call was made eventually and that’s what matters. But Newcastle may have been slightly fortunate towards the end of the half when Bruno Guimaraes appeared to punch Manuel Ugarte in the back of the head. The midfielder was only shown a yellow card after what was seemingly a quick check from VAR before the referee booked him.

On another day that gets checked and dissected by VAR officials with certain stills suggesting he got away with one.

It was only a few months ago that Jamal Lascelles looked destined to leave Newcastle with the club captain falling down the pecking order under Howe. But the Newcastle boss was happy to keep Lascelles at the club and has repeatedly praised the 29-year-old for his attitude behind the scenes.

More info

And he did what most central defenders in Ligue 1 struggle to do every week in playing a huge role in keeping superstar Kylian Mbappe quiet throughout the contest. PSG would have arguably targeted Lascelles as a potential weak point due to his lack of game time, but the centre-back proved that he has a part to play for his club this season.

When the Champions League group stage draw was made, there was a mix of excitement and apprehension from Newcastle supporters after being put in the same group as AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund and PSG. Qualifying from the ‘Group of Death’ originally appeared to be a tall order for Howe’s side.

But four points from their opening two games against arguably their toughest opponents proves they won’t be pushovers in the Champions League. And St James’ Park could well be a fortress where no European club fancies travelling to. Watch this space.
