Wolves have hilariously poked fun at Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool’s manager demanded his team’s game with Tottenham is replayed over the ‘unprecedented’ VAR offside controversy.

Luis Diaz saw a perfectly legitimate goal disallowed after VAR Darren England made a mistake during last Saturday’s Premier League match.

By the time the error was realised, play had already restarted and Liverpool went on to lose the match 2-1.

Speaking on Wednesday, Klopp said: ‘Yes, it was a mistake, an obvious mistake and I think there would have been solutions for is afterwards.

‘And I can say immediately, even probably some people don’t want me to say, but not as the manager of Liverpool so much, more as a football person, I think the outcome should be a replay.

Jurgen Klopp claimed the VAR offside controversy that went against Liverpool at Tottenham last weekend was ‘unprecedented’ – but Wolves were quick to point out it wasn’t

Back in January, Wolves were denied what appeared to be a legitimate winning goal in their FA Cup third round tie against Liverpool at Anfield – with Julen Lopetegui left furious

Defender Toti Gomes thought he’d scored an Anfield winner before VAR denied the goal

‘That’s how it is, probably will not happen.’

He then added: I think the situation is that unprecedented, that it didn’t happen before in that moment.’

But, as Wolves were swift to point out on their Tiktok channel, the Liverpool boss may have something of a short memory.

Back in January, Wolves saw what appeared to be a perfectly legal goal scored by Toti disallowed in their FA Cup third round tie at Anfield.

The defender had flicked home what would have been a winning goal for Wolves but the assistant referee raised his flag against Matheus Nunes, who took the original corner and then saw the ball returned to him before crossing.

Because the VAR had no camera angle available to provide enough evidence to overturn the decision, the officials went with the original on-field offside call and the game finished 2-2.

Wolves’ manager at the time Julen Lopetegui was furious, saying: ‘We have seen it, the offside doesn’t exist, I’m sorry. It’s impossible.

Matheus Nunes (bottom left) was flagged offside when the ball came back out to him following a corner. He delivered the cross from which Gomes scored. But VAR officials didn’t have a suitable camera angle to check the offside

On Saturday at Tottenham, VAR wrongly believed the on-field decision to be ‘goal’, meaning they said the check was complete, with the player clearly onside.

‘Someone has told him it’s offside, but we’ve seen the images, it doesn’t exist.

‘The decision is wrong. I make mistakes every day, and sometimes they do too. Today we have the help of VAR, and it’s a pity, because I’m sorry, it’s not offside.’

At the time, even Klopp sympathised, saying: ‘We have one picture where it may look offside, but I can understand why they are angry about it. We don’t want the VAR to just have one angle.’

To make matters worse for Wolves, they lost the replay at Molineux 1-0 as Liverpool made the fourth round.

The Spurs vs Liverpool game, which the hosts won thanks to Joel Matip’s own goal at the death having finally cracked the Reds’ nine men, isn’t likely to be replayed.

That’s despite referees’ chiefs admitting it was down to a ‘significant human error.’

The PGMOL released the full audio from the VAR hub during Liverpool ‘s controversial 2-1 defeat to Tottenham, that saw referee Simon Hooper incorrectly disallow the Reds a goal

VAR official Darren England (left) and VAR assistant Dan Cook (right) were dropped from their roles for upcoming fixtures after the high-profile error

England wrongly believed the on-field decision had been a goal rather than offside, so said ‘check complete’ once he’d confirmed Colombian winger Diaz was onside.

An audio recording of the exchange between on-field referee Simon Hooper and the VAR team at Stockley Park revealed England saying ‘oh f***’ as he realised his mistake.

England and his assistant VAR Dan Cook have been dropped from their roles for this weekend’s fixtures.

Assistant referee 1 (Adrian Holmes): ‘All good. Both holding. Both holding’

Referee (Simon Hooper): ‘Yeah, leave it alone.’

Assistant referee 1: ‘Waiting. Delaying, delaying.’

VAR (Darren England): ‘Possible offside, Diaz.’

Assistant referee 2 (Simon Long): ‘Give it.’

Assistant referee 1: ‘Coming back for the offside, mate.’

VAR: ‘Just checking the offside. Delay, delay.’

VAR: ‘Give the kick point, let’s go. Kick point please?’

Referee: ‘Yeah, no worries mate.’

Replay operator: ‘So, here we are.’

Referee: ‘Wait.’

Replay operator: ‘Just get a tight angle.’

VAR: ‘Yeah give me 2D line ready after this one from frame two after that.’

Replay operator: ‘So frame two there?’

VAR: ‘That’s fine. Perfect, yeah. 2D line on the left boot.’

Replay operator: ‘Let me just switch angles.’

VAR: ‘Romero, I think it is?’

Replay operator: ‘I think it might be this angle better? Happy with this angle?’

VAR: ‘Yep.’

—

Replay operator: ‘2D line on the boot?’

VAR: ‘2D line on the boot.’

Replay operator: ‘Yep, okay. So 2D line on the boot.’

VAR: ‘And stop. Check complete, check complete. That’s fine, perfect.’

Assistant referee 1: ‘Playing.’

Referee: ‘Cheers mate.’

VAR: ‘Thank you mate.’

Referee: ‘Well done boys, good process.’

Replay operator: ‘Wait, wait, wait, wait. The on-field decision was offside.. Are you happy with this?’

Assistant VAR (Dan Cook): ‘Yeah.’

Replay operator: ‘Are you happy with this?’

Assistant VAR: ‘Offside, goal, yeah. That’s wrong that, Daz.’

VAR: ‘What?’

Replay operator: ‘On-field decision was offside. Are you happy with this image? Yeah, it is onside. The image that we gave them is onside.’

Assistant VAR: ‘He’s playing him, he’s gone offside.

VAR: ‘Oh f***’

Replay operator: ‘Delay, delay. Oli (Kohout, PGMOL Hub Ops) saying to delay, Oli’s saying to delay.’

VAR: ‘Pardon?’

Replay operator: ‘Oli’s calling in to say delay the game. The decision is onside.’

VAR: ‘Can’t do anything.’

Replay operator: Oli’s saying to delay, Oli’s saying to delay.’

VAR: ‘Oli?’

Fourth official: ‘Yeah.’

Replay operator: ‘Delay the game, to delay the game? Stop the game.’

VAR: ‘They’ve started the game. Can’t do anything, can’t do anything.’

Assistant VAR: ‘Yeah they’ve restarted. Yeah. No.’

VAR: ‘I can’t do anything. I can’t do anything. F***.’
