Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan will be in action at high-profile golf tournament, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship – after initially entering under a fake name.

As the governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Al-Rumayyan is the chairman of LIV Golf, which turned the sport upside down and led to a bitter civil war before an unexpected truce was announced in the summer. That truce will lead to LIV merging with the PGA and DP World Tours.

He is now taking part in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland, a popular Pro-Am and one of the richest events on the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour). Bizarrely, Al-Rumayyan was listed in the draw as 'Andrew Waterman' before the line-up was updated with his actual name.

Having been invited to enter by tournament organiser Johann Rupert, Al-Rumayyan will play his first round today (Thursday) in the same group as R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers and LIV player Peter Uihlein, reports The Scotsman.

Rupert is the chairman of Dunhill’s parent company, Richemont, and chairman of the tournament’s championship committee. Referring to the stormiest period in the history of golf, he told The Scotsman: “Sport is supposed to unite people, not divide. We need to get peace.

“It was suggested to me a while ago that I should extend an invitation to His Excellency, but I only got confirmation last week to say he would be playing. And, if I am asked by anyone what we will discuss, I will be saying it will be support for amateur golf worldwide.

“What is happening in golf just now is not growing the golf. It’s only making the top 100 players a lot wealthier. We have just launched the African Amateur Championship, for example, and we need support to expand the credibility of that.”

The Alfred Dunhill Links has a prize fund of £5million (£4.12million). Al-Rumayyan will have headed north of the border in high spirits after Newcastle's 4-1 battering of Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park to go top of their Champions League group.
