Gunners fans are once again casting doubt over Mikel Arteta's judgement after David Raya had another difficult day at the office.

Some Arsenal supporters were already scratching their heads after the Spaniard was signed from Brentford in the summer. And those doubts appeared to have been validated after a string of gaffes in recent weeks.

But there was further turmoil at Stamford Bridge when Raya let Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk score from the strangest of angles on Saturday. The Blues already led 1-0 at the break before the Ukrainian's mishit cross fluked its way into the back of the net from close to the touchline

Raya was caught off-guard as the fluked flick flung past him to double Chelsea's lead in west London. And the former Bees star could only hold his hands up as to why he was so far off his line to allow the effort past him.

That wasn't the end of his woes, however, as Cole Palmer – who scored the first for Maurcio Pochettino's side – came close to adding a third thanks to Raya. It was the Gunners goalkeeper who gave up possession on the edge of his box in bizarre fashion, only to scramble and see the ball out for a corner.

Raya advocates will defend the player for at least making up for his error, while critics will argue the recovery should never have been required. And it left plenty of fans on social media pleading for the return of dethroned Aaron Ramsdale.

The England international was absent from Saturday's squad after wife Georgina gave birth to their child less than 24 hours before kick-off. Reporters noted some among the travelling Arsenal support was singing Ramsdale's name in his absence, with some perhaps holding out hope he'll make a return between the posts.

"David Raya will end up costing Arsenal the title this season," wrote former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys on X (formerly Twitter). "There is no way he’s an upgrade on Ramsdale." Some fans remarked there's 'no way' Ramsdale deserved to be dropped, and one commented he 'deserved better'.

It was just as well Raya did keep Palmer at bay for a second time as goals from Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard levelled the scoreline with minutes remaining. Robert Sanchez had a howler of his own in the Blues net for Arsenal's first, allowing Rice to poke home from long range.
