Jamie Carragher has lauded Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez for the authority he showed telling Raheem Sterling to allow Cole Palmer to take a penalty during their 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Saturday.

It was a disappointing result for Mauricio Pochettino’s side who allowed Arsenal back into the game late-on despite taking a two-goal lead. Cole Palmer would get the first from the penalty spot, before Mykhailo Mudryk caught David Raya stepping out from his goal and curled the ball into the back of the net.

Declan Rice pulled one back in the 77th minute, before substitute Leandro Trossard would level the scores in the 84th minute.

Palmer was a stand out for Chelsea during the match, but an on-field dispute between him and Raheem Sterling was one of the key talking points after the match.

Ahead of his penalty, Sterling, appeared to be arguing with the youngster about who should take the spot-kick, with Palmer grabbing the ball and keeping it from the winger.

Enzo Fernandez can be seen approaching the pair and appears to diffuse the situation, telling Sterling to let the 21-year-old take the spot kick.

And while Carragher admitted he didn’t like to see players fighting over who should be taking penalties, he lauded Fernandez for calmly diffusing the situation while also giving Palmer the penalty.

‘I don’t really like that,’ Carragher said speaking on the altercation on Monday Night Football. ‘I think people should know who the penalty taker is before the game.’

‘The one thing I did like was the authority shown by Enzo Fernandez there.

‘For a young player who’s saying to a seasoned professional in Raheem Sterling, “listen, Cole Palmer’s taking it” and almost in a cool manner it almost came across kind of came across as “captain-like” – Like he’s in his early 30s.’

He added: ‘I thought that was really interesting. And it was good to see Cole Palmer score for his performance.’
