{"id":295332,"date":"2023-10-25T00:24:19","date_gmt":"2023-10-25T00:24:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/allmysportsnews.com\/?p=295332"},"modified":"2023-10-25T00:24:19","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T00:24:19","slug":"khiara-keating-hopes-to-inspire-after-lionesses-call-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allmysportsnews.com\/soccer\/khiara-keating-hopes-to-inspire-after-lionesses-call-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Khiara Keating hopes to &apos;inspire&apos; after Lionesses call-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Khiara Keating hopes to &#8216;inspire&#8217; by becoming the first goalkeeper of colour to play for the Lionesses &#8211; after Sarina Wiegman handed the Man City stopper her first call-up to the senior squad<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The 19-year-old received her first call up to the Lionesses senior team last week<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>She is the fourth goalkeeper of colour to have been called up to an England team<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span>There has been criticism over the lack of representation in past squads\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Khiara Keating says she hopes to be an inspiration as she looks to become the first goalkeeper of colour to play for the Lionesses.<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old received her first call up to the England senior team last week following a string of impressive performances for Manchester City at the start of the Women\u2019s Super League season.<\/p>\n<p>Keating, who is of mixed race, is only the fourth goalkeeper of colour to have been called up to an England team, men\u2019s or women\u2019s, following in the footsteps of David James, Shaka Hislop and Becky Spencer. James is the only one to have played, with Hislop and Spencer going on to represent Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica respectively.<\/p>\n<p>There has previously been criticism over the lack of representation in past England teams while Arsenal released a statement after their 2023-2024 all-white squad photo.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think it\u2019s important for anyone to make their debut but obviously coming from a background of colour, there\u2019s not many of us,\u2019 Keating said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/25\/00\/76961273-12668751-image-a-17_1698190028120.jpg\" height=\"436\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Khiara Keating is only the fourth goalkeeper of colour to have been called up to an England team, men\u2019s or women\u2019s<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/25\/00\/76961317-12668751-image-a-15_1698189915382.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Wiegman has handed the talented 19-year-old stopper her first call-up to the senior squad<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/25\/00\/76961329-12668751-image-a-16_1698189920136.jpg\" height=\"403\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Keating is relishing training alongside Mary Earps (pictured), England\u2019s No 1 and the current FIFA Best goalkeeper<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think we\u2019re starting to see a rise and I\u2019m just happy that I could be an inspiration to anyone that\u2019s out there who\u2019s thinking \u201cmaybe I will get judged or maybe it\u2019s not for me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m just grateful to be in a position where I can just be a role model to those people.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Keating is one of four goalkeepers in the Lionesses squad ahead of back-to-back Nations League games with Belgium, with Mary Earps, Hannah Hampton and Ellie Roebuck the other three.<\/p>\n<p>The teenager has been rewarded for keeping Roebuck and Sandy MacIver, who recently switched her international allegiance from England to Scotland, out of the City team but admitted she had not been expecting to get the call from boss Sarina Wiegman.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was driving and then obviously, I&#8217;ve gone back on my phone and I&#8217;ve seen Sarina&#8217;s picture,\u2019 Keating said as she recalled the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I thought \u201cmaybe I should call her back to see what she wants!\u201d Then she delivered the great news and then I was just buzzing.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/25\/00\/76961421-12668751-image-a-18_1698190203259.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The teenager has been rewarded for keeping Roebuck and Sandy MacIver\u00a0out of the City team<\/p>\n<p>The youngster says she has also been relishing training alongside Earps, England\u2019s No 1 and the current FIFA Best goalkeeper.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She [Earps] has proven to everyone over this past year that she is so good and the best in the world and she can achieve anything.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Obviously, it&#8217;s a bit surreal that I am here with her.
