Laura Woods was left hanging by Erik ten Hag after the Red Devils boss accidentally snubbed her attempt at a handshake live on TNT Sports. Ten Hag joined Woods and Manchester United legends Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes for a quick chat after his side finally got off the mark in the Champions League at the third time of asking with a 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen.

The under-fire duo of Andre Onana and Harry Maguire made telling contributions at Old Trafford as United lifted themselves off the foot of Group A. Maguire’s headed goal put the Red Devils 1-0 up at the three-quarter mark before Onana saved a stoppage-time penalty to secure all three points for the hosts.

It keeps United’s hopes of progression into the knockout stages alive following back-to-back losses to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in their opening group-stage games. An ecstatic Ten Hag gave an impassioned interview to TNT Sports after the game in which he praised his team’s character but as he bid farewell to the panel the Dutchman missed Woods’ handshake.

Ten Hag went to shake hands with Scholes and Ferdinand first as Woods comically held out her hand, leaving the award-winning presenter “double embarrassed”. But United’s head coach made up for it by shaking hands with Woods and apologised profusely as they both laughed.

During the interview itself, Ten Hag said of the game: “It’s incredible, a great night. Especially so after conceding a penalty in the last 30 seconds. It should not have happened [the penalty decision], but it was a brilliant save from Andre. Those players, Harry Maguire and Andre, both played a very good game. He [Onana] made a brilliant save just after half-time.

“It was very important save as well, but it was a soft penalty to concede. We should have got a penalty ourselves earlier in the game, and I don’t know why it’s not a penalty.
