Former Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was ringside to watch Tyson Fury take on Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia. The legendary forward’s appearance certainly garnered a resounding reaction but viewers were split on whether punters were were hailing him or booing him.

The Portuguese icon now plies his trade with Al-Nassr of the Saudi Pro League, having departed Old Trafford for a new chapter in the Gulf State. However, despite scoring 20 times in as many outings for his side this season, it is unclear whether he has won over the favour of the public in the country.

Ronaldo appeared alongside the likes of namesake Ronaldo Nazario and famed WWE stars Vince McMahon and ‘The Undertaker’ on the big screens in Riyadh. Indeed a host of household names had travelled to see the resurgent Fury face MMA heavyweight champion Ngannou face off, with Eminem and Kanye West also present.

Likewise, former Real Madrid marksman Ronaldo would take his seat alongside wife Georgina Rodriguez for the heavyweight bout at Boulevard Hall. However, audiences were split over whether his appearance was accompanied by booing or shouts of ‘Sui!’ – his trademark phrase.

Of course, the latter would make sense as the prolific goalscorer has become synonymous with the phrase after adopting the ‘Sui’ celebration. He would first perform this move to mark one of his 735 strikes against Chelsea in a pre-season friendly with Madrid in 2013.

From there, the unique move, which involves Ronaldo jumping into the air, before stretching out his arms and yelling ‘Sui’ before facing in the opposite direction, has become known worldwide. Unsurprisingly, two camps emerged online, with X users giving their opinion over whether the crowd at the Fury v Ngannou fight were paying tribute to the football great.

On the one hand, some users felt that the reaction was simply a dig towards Ronaldo, with one user seemingly left bemused by the incident, saying: “Anyone know why Ronaldo is being heavily booed everytime he’s shown on screen?”
