Erik ten Hag bizarrely claimed Manchester United are going in the right direction despite a derby day battering at the hands of Manchester City.

The Dutchman’s side are now a whopping 11 points off the top of the Premier League and eight away from the top four after five defeats in 10 games. Erling Haaland bagged a brace to silence taunts from the United fans before Phil Foden completed the derby demolition at Old Trafford.

Yet the United boss somehow reckons wins over Brentford, Sheffield United and FC Copenhagen is a sign things are looking up for them. Ten Hag said: "The three games before we won and the spirit is very good. I think we are on the way up, the start was difficult but now we are on the way up.

"When injuries are getting back we will be getting stronger. We have to be patient but I am happy with some injuries coming back and then our side will be stronger." Ten Hag’s words will be scoffed at by angry United fans with many of them heading for the exit door when Foden grabbed the third at Old Trafford.

But Haaland’s double silenced the home crowd who had chanted "Keano, Keano" at him when he scored the first-half penalty. Former United midfielder Roy Keane infamously got sent off for a horror tackle on Haaland’s father Alfie Inge in 2001.

Haaland said: "There were so many people singing 'Keano' – I don't why, I used it as motivation. I gave them a good celebration." City boss Pep Guardiola was left to praise man-of-the-match Bernardo Silva as his side moved to third and just two points off league leaders Tottenham.

The Spaniard said: “He doesn't wear earrings or tattoos and has a normal car. He's an incredible player for us. He's one of the best players I've ever seen in my life and I am lucky to train him. He is one of the best, for how intelligent and clever and what a good guy he is."
