England face a battle to qualify for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy after the ICC confirmed that the top seven sides at the end of the league stage of the current ODI World Cup in India, alongside the hosts, Pakistan will compete in the eight-team event.

As it stands, Bangladesh and England who are 9th and 10th in the standings respectively, would miss out. A win for England against India on Sunday would put them level on four points with four other countries, with three games still to play against Australia, Netherlands and Pakistan.

An ICC spokesperson confirmed to ESPN Cricinfo that the qualification system for the 2025 Champions Trophy was approved by the ICC Board in 2021, when the competition was brought back as one of the eight men’s global tournaments to be held in the 2024-31 cycle.

The ICC’s process also means that other full-member nations like West Indies, Zimbabwe and Ireland will not not have the chance to qualify for the 2025 tournament, as they did not qualify for the ongoing World Cup.

The Champions Trophy last took place in 2017, when Pakistan beat India in the final at The Oval.
