Sheffield Wednesday's owner has cheekily urged supporters of the club to donate £100 each so the players can receive their wages.

The Owls were placed under a registration embargo by the EFL last week due to money owed to HM Revenue and Customs and club owner Dejphon Chansiri wants fans to help bail the club out. The Thai multi-millionaire, who has been in charge at Hillsborough since 2015, admitted he isn't able to pay players and staff their wages in full due to cash flow issues, despite having an estimate net worth of over £500million.

In response, he suggested that 20,000 Wednesday supporters donate £100 each in order to raise the funds. Speaking to the Sheffield Star, he said: "If 20,000 people gave £100, then it's £2m and it's clear."

The Yorkshire club are rock bottom of the Championship after winning just one of their opening 14 games. Wednesday dropped into League One under Chansiri's watch in 2021, but bounced back up two years later via the play-offs.

Manager Darren Moore controversially departed over the summer, sparking fan protests against Chansiri's leadership. In September he threatened to stop funding the club after being "treated unfairly" by supporters.

"I am the one who saved the club and spent the money for the club, I am the one who needs to pay around £2m on average every month," he said in a statement. "Some fans need to have more respect for owners of clubs and not be so selfish, thinking of their own benefit without doing anything good to the club.

"Those fans who create trouble to the club and myself and believe that they are the real owner of the club need to be responsible for the financial matters of the club from now on," added Chansiri, who touched on this point again when urging fans to donate £100. He said: "If you don’t want to save your club, then don’t call yourselves the owners and me the custodian."
