Neil Warnock has claimed Erik ten Hag will not last at Man United and his expensive summer signings would not have started for Huddersfield when he managed them.

Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City was United’s seventh in 14 games this season, and it has turned up the heat on Ten Hag again following three straight wins.

The Manchester side will meet Newcastle in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford tonight in a repeat of last season’s final, and the Dutchman will be hoping for an immediate response.

However, former Cardiff City and QPR manager Warnock believes his days at the club are numbered.

Erik Ten Hag suffered his fifth league defeat of the season on Sunday against Man City

Former Cardiff manager Neil Warnock said he has ‘not enjoyed’ watching Ten Hag this season

‘The money that he’s spent, people forget. Whatever you think about the owners they’ve spent some massive money.

‘Some of the players, they’ve spent £60-70million. I wouldn’t have had them with me at Huddersfield.’

The Red Devils spent a staggering £177million this summer on Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

However, none of these players – including Sofyan Amrabat who was signed on loan – have hit the ground running so far at Old Trafford.

Asked whether Ten Hag will last at the club, he added: ‘I don’t think he will personally. I’m not sure he wants to last either. I think he knows he’s banging his head against a brick wall.’

Following United’s loss in the Manchester Derby, Gary Neville dismissed Ten Hag’s claim that United have played ‘very good’ in their last three matches against City.

He told Sky Sports: ‘The performances of Manchester United against Manchester City have not been good.

England international Mason Mount was signed in the summer for £55million from Chelsea

The Red Devils also bought Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £65million

United will meet Newcastle in the Carabao Cup tonight in a repeat of last season’s final

‘I was at the cup final sat with 90,000 other people. The performance was not good. That performance in the second half today was appalling.’

Mail Sport’s Chris Sutton has also claimed Mason Mount has fallen ‘into a black hole’ at the club since joining and has come to symbolise the regression of Ten Hag’s side.

Ian Ladyman also said: ‘Gary Neville made the point on Sky Sports on Sunday that Old Trafford is becoming the type of place where good players go to die.

‘And Mason Mount, if he’s not careful, is going to be the next one.’
