We have been c**p. Everything we&#8217;ve tried throughout this World Cup, it&#8217;s just not worked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We know that as individuals and as a team, I think that&#8217;s where it is as a team, we&#8217;ve been nowhere near good enough to be able to compete in a World Cup.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>With three games still to play, though, and a distinctly unlikely mathematical chance of progression there is something on the line for the reigning world champions before their defence formally ends and the crown is handed over.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As well as &#8216;pride&#8217; Stokes indicated that a win over arch-nemesis Australia on Sunday could be some consolation for a bruising campaign, in what promises to be a huge match despite the relative lack of importance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I think the biggest thing that we&#8217;ve got to play for is the pride of what it is to put the three lions on your chest,&#8217; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;England and Australia in any sport, whenever the two nations come together and play against each other, it&#8217;s always a big occasion.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Stokes is set to undergo knee surgery at the end of the tournament, having been unable to operate as a true all-rounder, not having bowled since England&#8217;s second Test defeat to Australia in the Ashes this summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He expects to be out for five to seven weeks, giving him plenty of time to get ready for the first Test against India at Hyderabad on January 25.
