For the first time in 20 years, Cristiano Ronaldo was not named on the 30-man shortlist to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or award. Lionel Messi scooped up a record eighth title as he was again named the best player in the world, something that Ronaldo’s sister disagreed with.

Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, is one of his biggest fans and isn’t shy to give her thoughts on the age-old battle between him and Messi.

After Messi won the Ballon d’Or, a post on Instagram was shared by a Ronaldo fan page of the Al Nassr striker with all of his individual trophies. The post was captioned “Earned, not given,” as it was suggested that Messi continues to be favored by FIFA.

Ronaldo’s sister, Kate, then replied to the post with clapping emojis as she supported their statement. Ronaldo and Messi are easily the greatest players of the current generation and also two of the best players in history, but the debate between fans over who is better has been going on for decades.

Messi shifted the debate in 2022 as he won the World Cup with Argentina, essentially completing soccer in the process as it was the only major trophy he hadn’t won. Ronaldo had his moment on the international stage with Portugal in 2016 when they won the European Championship, but since then Messi and Argentina have won the Copa America, and now the World Cup.

Ronaldo’s sister was upset after Messi’s World Cup win too, as she posted an angry message after Argentina beat France in the final. “The worst World Cup of all time,” she wrote, before later crediting Messi as she added: “That thankfully gave us a great final. What a match. Congratulations to Argentina.”

Messi was always the favorite to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or after his World Cup success, and he even beat Manchester City striker Erling Haaland to the award. Haaland won the treble with City and broke the Premier League goalscoring record (36) for a single season.
