Luis Diaz's father is set to be released by his kidnappers after he was verified as a member of the Liverpool forward's family.

Colombian terrorist group Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional (ELN), who kidnapped Diaz's parents on October 29, confirmed in a statement that the release process for the Premier League star's father, Luis Manuel Diaz, had begun.

Diaz's mum and dad were abducted at gun-point on Saturday by the left-wing guerrilla group from the town of Barrancas in La Guajira in northern Colombia. Diaz's mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was rescued after she was left in a car by the terror group as members dragged her husband away.

The Colombian government have been working with ELN to resolve the situation, and despite a nerve-wracking pause in communications, which Colombian President Gustavo Petro described as "very dangerous", the ELN has confirmed that Luis Manuel will be released imminently.

Liverpool ace Diaz broke his silence on the horror situation earlier this week by urging followers on social media to join a march to call for the release of his father. The 26-year-old was informed of the situation mere hours before the Reds' 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest last Sunday.

The director general of Colombia's National Police force, William Rene Salamanca Ramirez, issued a direct statement to the Liverpool star insisting that the authorities were utilising resources on land, sea and in the air to safely recover his father.

It emerged earlier this week that Diaz was struggling to sleep as he anxiously awaited news about his father. He returned to training earlier this week and is in contention to face Luton tomorrow, in spite of the ongoing situation.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said he'd only include Diaz in his matchday squad if the ex-Porto man "feels right". He told reporters: "We have to see how he is and we go from there. The news from Colombia gives us a little bit of hope. We are waiting for the really good news but that’s it pretty much."
