Carlo Ancelotti hit back at Gerard Pique’s claim that ‘nobody will remember’ Real Madrid’s 14th Champions League trophy by witheringly questioning whether the former Barcelona player ‘lived in his own world’.

The Madrid behemoths made history with their record-extending most recent win in the competition which saw them beat Liverpool at Stade de France 1-0 in June 2022.

Vinicius Jnr was the sole goalscorer in the tie, which not only wrote the Brazil international into the history books but cemented his status as one of the brightest stars in the side under Ancelotti.

Los Blancos’ head coach was incensed by comments made by the ex-Blaugrana on Catalan radio which brushed aside the Italian manager’s achievement, and those of Real Madrid more generally.

‘Madrid’s current team is just more of the same,’ Pique told RAC1. ‘They don’t offer much, but they get results, and when February comes around they’ll still be in with a chance of winning every competition, including the Champions League, of course.

‘When we (Barcelona) win, we are rememebered forever. When they win, it’s just one more.

‘Their last Champions League victory was a miracle because they were second-best in every round, and nobody will remember it’.

Pique was part of the Barcelona side that last won the Champions League – the club’s fifth – in 2015, under then-head coach Luis Enrique.

In 2021-22, Pique featured in his last full season of European football before his retirement in November of the following season to far lesser acclaim, as the club was eliminated at the group stage and dropped down to compete in the Europa League.

Ancelotti was prompted on Pique’s comments after Real Madrid’s latest group stage victory against Braga on Wednesday evening, which helped secure the side early qualification to the knockout stages for the 27th straight season.

‘Pique lives in his own world, which is not the same where Madridistas live,’ the former Chelsea boss told reporters. ‘I can assure Pique that no one, not a single Madridista, will forget the Decimocuarta (14th title).

The Italian manager oversaw the Decimocuarta – and his fourth Champions League as a coach

Vinicius Jnr scored the only goal in the tie and cemented his place as one of Ancelotti’s brightest young stars

During the same season – Pique’s last full Champions League campaign – Barcelona failed to make it out of their group after falling to Bayern Munich and Benfica

‘Not a single one. That Champions League will be remembered eternally’.

The Spanish giants are considered among the pack of favourites to win an unthinkable 15th title at Wembley this season after a dominant turn in the group stage.

The recruitment of Jude Bellingham during the summer transfer window has proved transformative for the capital side, with the England starlet already tallying up 13 goals and a further three assists in his first 14 appearances in white and gold.

Real Madrid currently sit second in LaLiga, just two points behind surprise table-toppers Girona, and two ahead of their Catalonian rivals.
