{"id":297553,"date":"2023-11-14T11:26:42","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T11:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/allmysportsnews.com\/?p=297553"},"modified":"2023-11-14T11:26:42","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T11:26:42","slug":"raphael-dwamena-chose-to-have-defibrillator-removed-before-his-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allmysportsnews.com\/soccer\/raphael-dwamena-chose-to-have-defibrillator-removed-before-his-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Raphael Dwamena chose to have defibrillator removed before his death"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Former LaLiga star and Ghana striker Raphael Dwamena&#8217;s cardiologist reveals he chose to have a defibrillator REMOVED a year before he collapsed and died on the pitch<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ex-Ghana striker Raphael Dwamena passed away on Saturday after collapsing\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>His cardiologist has revealed the striker chose to have his defibrillator removed\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s a three-team title race&#8230; Toney could lead Arsenal to glory: It&#8217;s All Kicking Off\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Former LaLiga star Raphael Dwamena chose to have his defibrillator removed a year before he collapsed and died on the pitch, according to his cardiologist.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old, who played for Levante and Zaragoza in Spain, passed away on Saturday after falling to the ground during an Albanian league game while playing for\u00a0KF Egnatia against\u00a0Partizani.<\/p>\n<p>Other players rushed over after the incident in the 24th minute of the match and, despite immediate medical intervention, he could not be revived.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dwamena&#8217;s cardiologist, Dr. Antonio Asso, has since opened up on the player&#8217;s heart condition, which he said was a &#8216;serious\u00a0ventricular arrhythmia&#8217; and subsequently having a defibrillator inserted &#8211; before making a &#8216;personal decision&#8217; to remove it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He died as a result of a respectable personal decision,&#8217; said Asso, as per Spanish outlet Sport. &#8216;But if the defibrillator had not been explanted, Raphael would still be alive.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/14\/09\/77690155-12746939-Dwamema_spent_two_years_in_LaLiga_with_Levante_playing_12_league-a-22_1699955459416.jpg\" height=\"437\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Raphael Dwamema spent two years in LaLiga with Levante, playing 12 league games but failing to score<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the player&#8217;s initial discovery of a heart problem, he explained how he advised the player to quit professional football and how the defibrillator had saved his life on one occasion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We managed to convince him of the imperative need to implant a defibrillator to at least guarantee his life, at the same time that we advised against practicing professional sports,&#8217; he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;A couple of years ago they told me that the defibrillator had saved his life when he had a malignant arrhythmia that had been correctly treated automatically by the device. We had subsequently lost contact.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;From that moment on, I was aware that one day the tragedy that occurred on Saturday on a soccer field in Albania would happen.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He called Dwamena a &#8216;great and noble boy&#8217; and said he was &#8216;determined to follow his professional career&#8217; but &#8216;ended hope of influencing him&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dwamena, this season&#8217;s top scorer with nine goals in the Albanian Super League, made eight appearances for Ghana and scored twice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He signed for Levante in 2018 and played one season before being loaned out to Zaragoza, where he played in 2019-20. Condolences to family and friends.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Spanish clubs Levante and Zaragoza expressed condolences over the death of their former player.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Our thoughts are with his family and his loved ones in these difficult moments. His legacy in our club will last forever,&#8217; Levante said on X.<\/p>\n<p>Zaragoza also said on X: &#8216;We are devastated by the sad news of the passing of our former player Raphael Dwamena. You will always be in the memory of Zaragoza\u00b4s fans.
