Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale has been backed to leave in January after Mikel Arteta broke a promise over his game time. Former England international Paul Robinson says the goalkeeper has been treated unfairly and must consider his future.

Ramsdale was named in the PFA Team of the Year last season after leading Arsenal to second place in the Premier League. But after starting the first four matches of the campaign, he has since lost his spot to summer signing David Raya.

Arteta said at the time that he would rotate his goalkeepers and even substitute them during matches when he felt the moment was right. But that is yet to come to fruition, with Raya playing every minute of the 12 matches across the league and Champions League since.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Ramsdale in the winter window. Arteta said last week that he wants the 25-year-old to stay and warned him not to make a rash decision on his future.

Ramsdale has kept his spot in the England squad for now but Gareth Southgate has admitted that may change if he doesn’t start playing at club level. Robinson is surprised with how Ramsdale has been treated and says a move away in January may be the best outcome.

Asked about that possibility, Robinson told Sky Sports News: “Yeah I think you’re right, yeah. I think what Mikel Arteta said and the way he treated Aaron Ramsdale at the time was very harsh.

“I thought he had an excellent season last season and looking at it now is it a case of don’t fix something if it’s not broken? The Arsenal manager had designs and ideas of what he wanted to do with his goalkeeping situation but for Aaron Ramsdale personally, you have to think about your own career at times.

“Where he was at and the level that he reached, an international level, he seems a fantastic character. I don’t know him personally but looking at the documentary, reading and hearing things about him, the type of character you want in your dressing room.
