Gareth Southgate left out Raheem Sterling again from his England squad | Football Digest

Fikayo Tomori has revealed his frustration at trying to establish himself as a regular member of the England squad. It is over four years since the former Chelsea defender, currently at AC Milan, first broke through to the Three Lions senior camp as a 21-year-old in October 2019.

But this current get-together is the first time he has been part of the set-up for three camps in a row. Tomori, 26 next month, has played only four times for England, each in a different calendar year. He admits that it has been a difficult journey.

“Has there been an element of frustration? Yeah of course,” he said. “Most players will say once you come here, you want to stay here and when you get taste for it, you want to you want to keep building on it.

“My England career’s been a bit stop start. When I was 21 and I first got called up I made a few appearances off the bench and then after the COVID year, I wasn’t playing as much so obviously, I wasn’t getting called up.

“Then I went to Milan and I’ve been in a few camps, out a few camps. But this season started off really well and I’ve have managed to play a few games and I’ve come to every camp. So yeah, it has started off well and now I just want to keep it going and play more games, get more caps.”

His last was against Australia in October and with John Stones injured, there is potential for more action against Malta or North Macedonia. All the while, his Italian Job is making him a better player, in his own opinion.
