Ex-F1 racer Mark Blundell has described the absence of Michael Schumacher from the forefront of the sport as a "huge loss".

The legendary Formula One driver, who dominated the sport for years, suffered a serious head injury while skiing back in 2013. Schumacher careered off course when heading down a slope and hit his head on a rock.

The serious injury has led to the German driver, who won seven F1 drivers championship titles during his storied career, being removed from the spotlight by his family ever since, who remain keen on maintaining his privacy.

While Formula One is never short of stars to build up the sport around, there is no doubt Schumacher's name is arguably one of, if not the most famous names to have ever graced the asphalt.

And speaking to Online Betting Guide, Blundell gave his thoughts on how sad it is for the sport and its fans to not have a voice like Schumacher's front and centre, nearly a decade on from his horrifying accident.

Sky Sports is bringing you 500 live football games to watch, as well access to Cricket, Golf, F1, Boxing, NFL, NBA and more across eight dedicated channels. Sky Sports is the only way to watch all the action this year.

£22 a month

"Michael is a big loss for F1 as he had all of those titles under his belt, and we're sadly not able to hear about those accolades and how he went about getting them," Blundell said. "We also missed on how he could support his son and other up-and-coming drivers. That's a huge loss.

"At the end of the day, what happened to him was incredibly difficult to take. I don't know where we are today with Michael's health as he's rightly guarded. It's such a shame we missed out on his insight. He's still around, and hopefully he understands what's going on. That would be a plus. It's very difficult.''

Blundell then added: "I haven't spoken to any of his family or friends since the crash. Michael is incredibly well-protected and the information we get is from the outside. I hope the technology is advanced enough to help his recovery someday, but I really don't know."
