Las Vegas: Max Verstappen won his 18th race of the season Saturday night (Sunday evening AEDT) with a pass of Charles Leclerc at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which turned out to be one of the most competitive events of the season despite a disastrous start to Formula One’s expensive extravaganza.

“Viva Las Vegas! Viva Las Vegas!” sang the three-time reigning world champion as he crossed the checkered flag waved by Justin Bieber. Verstappen had slammed the race at every chance, yet raced in an Elvis-inspired fire-suit and took the victory on the famed Las Vegas Strip.

Race winner Max Verstappen celebrates in parc ferme after winning the Las Vegas Grand Prix.Credit: Getty

The race was the third stop this season in the United States, more than any other country. But the event has been lambasted — especially by Verstappen — for its opulence and excess.

Tickets were expensive, hotels along the famed Strip hiked their prices, and the sporting element of the 21st race of the season was overshadowed by everything from celebrities, musical acts, a myriad of Elvis impersonators roaming the paddock and a wedding chapel where former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve was married earlier in the week.

F1 owner Liberty expected to spend $500 million on the first grand prix it self-promoted, but paddock speculation before Saturday night’s main event was that it had gone well over budget.

The entire event nearly imploded nine minutes into the first practice session when Carlos Sainz Jr. ran over a water drain valve on the track that badly damaged his Ferrari and F1 had to close the 6.2 kilometre circuit that utilises a long portion of the Strip for inspection.

It made it critical for F1 to deliver a good race Saturday night and, even though it was Verstappen’s sixth consecutive victory, it was one of the most spirited events of the season.

Leclerc and teammate Sainz had qualified 1-2 on Friday, but Sainz was handed a 10-place penalty on the starting grid because Ferrari was forced to change his car because of the damage from hitting the drain cover. That pushed Verstappen up to second for the start and Verstappen immediately pounced at the start.

The Dutchman forced Leclerc off track to take the lead, and although Leclerc demanded that Verstappen be forced to give the position back, Verstappen was only handed a five-second penalty. He served it during a later pit stop, but his Red Bull is so strong, he remained in contention the entire race.

Leclerc passed Sergio Perez for the lead with 17 laps remaining, and then three laps later Verstappen passed his teammate to take second. He and Perez then worked to create a tow that allowed Verstappen to catch Leclerc for the win with 13 laps remaining.

Dutchman Max Verstappen, who won the Las Vegas Grand Prix, with placegetters Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez.Credit: Getty

Perez had worked his way past Leclerc for second, but Leclerc grabbed it back at the finish to deny Red Bull its seventh 1-2 finish of the season.

“I wanted that win so bad,” Leclerc moaned. “But what a race. Honestly, there is nothing left. Oh my God.”

Even so, with Lewis Hamilton finishing seventh, Perez likely did enough to ensure he will finish second to Verstappen in the final driver standings.

Verstappen, Leclerc and Perez were then driven in a limousine to the victory podium.

“We go straight to the nightclub,” Verstappen told his fellow podium finishers during the limo ride.

The Leclerc finish helped Ferrari cut its deficit to Mercedes to four points for second in the constructor championship headed into next week’s finale at Abu Dhabi.

Lando Norris of McLaren was involved in an early accident and taken to a local hospital for precautionary reasons. AP

A class action lawsuit has been filed against the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix as the fallout from lost track action at the start of the weekend continues.

Fans wait in the stands in Las Vegas as second practice is delayed.Credit: AP

The suit, filed by Dimopoulos Law Firm and co-counsel JK Legal & Consulting in Nevada District Court on behalf of 35,000 fans, alleges breach of contract, negligence and deceptive trade practices.

Formula 1 came in for renewed criticism on Friday (US time) after refusing to apologise or issue refunds to disgruntled fans who witnessed just eight minutes of track action on a farcical opening day.

Racegoers, some of whom had paid thousands of dollars for their tickets, were left furious after waiting in the cold for almost six hours to watch a heavily delayed second practice, only to be forcibly removed from the circuit half an hour before it started.

Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali and Las Vegas Grand Prix CEO Renee Wilm issued a lengthy statement on Friday justifying their actions, explaining the delay was down to FIA staff being forced to make repairs to the circuit after a manhole cover became dislodged in FP1.

“We have all been to events, like concerts, games and even other Formula 1 races, that have been cancelled because of factors like weather or technical issues,” read the statement. “It happens, and we hope people will understand.”

Dominicali and Wilm added that fans were told to leave due to “concern about our public safety and security officials, transportation employees and hospitality staff.”

However, the statement was notable for the complete absence of any sort of apology, merely describing the chain of events as “disappointing”.

It is understood that was a legal decision as to apologise might have constituted an acceptance of liability, which could have meant an obligation to issue refunds.

Items in the grand prix store are pricey.Credit: AP

As opposed to a full refund, single-day ticket holders have instead been offered a $US200 ($307) voucher for the Las Vegas Grand Prix official shop. Telegraph Sport went to a merchandise store at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to see what that might buy you. A Mercedes hoodie was $US210, a Ferrari hoodie was $US328. Aston Martin team issue caps were $US100.

Those with full, three-day tickets will not be reimbursed at all for Thursday night’s lost action.

“We will vindicate the rights of the fans that travelled great distances and paid small fortunes to attend, but were deprived of the experience,” Dimopoulos Law Firm owner and lead attorney Steve Dimopoulos said in a statement.

A spokesperson for LVGP said: “We cannot comment on the litigation. Our focus is on ensuring that our fans have an entertaining experience in a safe and secure environment which is always our top priority.”

Formula 1 is promoting the Las Vegas race itself, having invested £500 million (about $956 million) of its own money to buy and develop the land and paddock complex. Ticket and hotel prices for the first Formula 1 grand prix to be held in Las Vegas in more than 40 years are eye-watering, with some hospitality packages costing over $US150,000 for the race weekend.

Despite anticipating capacity crowds of over 100,000 each day, the grandstands on Thursday were sparsely attended. A spokesperson for F1 said 70,000 attended on Friday, which is better although still some way short of expectations.

The Telegraph, London

News, results and expert analysis from the weekend of sport sent every Monday. Sign up for our Sport newsletter.

F1 hit with lawsuit on behalf of 35,000 furious fans
