Tom Brady has celebrated Wayne Rooney’s first win as Birmingham City boss – but some fans still aren’t happy with the Manchester United legend.

Rooney collected his maiden win as Blues manager at the sixth time of asking against the Championship’s bottom club, Sheffield Wednesday. Substitute Jordan James grabbed the 82nd-minute winner after Juninho Bacuna’s equaliser cancelled out George Byers’ opener for the beleaguered Owls.

NFL icon Brady was announced as a minority owner in the club in August following a takeover by Knighthead Capital Management LLC. However, he soon came under fire following the club’s decision to sack John Eustace, who had led the Blues into the play-off zone, and replace him with Rooney.

An awful start to his reign had already led to calls for him to be sacked, meaning the win over Wednesday was a big relief to everyone at St Andrew's. As James struck to secure the three points, Brady replied “GET IN!” to the club’s goal alert on X (formerly Twitter).

However, Birmingham fans weren’t getting carried away. One told Brady: “About time you invested more time in the project @TomBrady, get on the training ground and look at injuries and fitness.”

A second said:“A win is a win, but it's only Sheffield Wednesday. Have to build on it midweek and next week!” A third added: “A welcome win but I fear it is papering over the cracks, not convincing against the bottom club.”

A fourth posted: “Barely beating bottom of the league is hardly a good result btw.” Another simply said: “We were absolutely dreadful.”

Rooney himself wasn’t happy with the first half performance, saying after the match: “We didn’t play with the energy I wanted us to play with in the first half and I made the players aware of that but in the second half we were a lot better.

“I wasn’t very pleased with the first half. I thought Sheffield Wednesday pressed really well without the ball but we have to show more composure on the ball because we were too happy to go back to John Ruddy and allow him to make decisions.

“I’ve seen an improvement week by week so if that first half was four weeks ago, I could have understood it, but it was unrecognisable to what we’ve been doing during the international break.”
