Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold could face disciplinary action following his celebration against Manchester City. The England international may be in hot water for deliberately celebrating in front of the opposition supporters.

Alexander-Arnold scored the equalising goal for Liverpool in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the Etihad. He ran with his arms stretched out to a corner of the stadium that was full of home fans in the aftermath.

While looking at the supporters, he gestured by putting his finger to his lips. After the game, Alexander-Arnold revealed he deliberately celebrated in front of the City fans, admitting he enjoyed the moment.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s always good to celebrate in front of away fans. Seeing all of the faces is really funny.”

However, he faces the prospect of a potential punishment. IFAB, the body that determines the laws of the game in the Premier League and across the world, states in Law 12 that a player “must be cautioned” if they are “gesturing or acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way”.

Referee Chris Kavanagh didn’t book Alexander-Arnold at the time, though it remains to be seen if he mentioned it in his post-match report. The Mirror claims that, while the FA could action, Alexander-Arnold will likely only be warned about his future conduct.

Liverpool showcased their title credentials by ending City’s 23-match winning run at the Etihad in all competitions. The Reds have dropped to third in the table though following Arsenal’s late win over Brentford.

Alexander-Arnold claimed his team’s performance was not up to scratch despite picking up a valuable point. He added: “I just don’t think we played particularly well to be honest, especially in the first half.

“Their formation and setup really challenged us and they had a lot of bodies in there which was difficult to deal with but we regrouped at halftime, came back out with more of a gameplan and pressed them.
