Rory McIlroy has lined his pockets to the tune of nearly £12million thanks to the PGA Tour's 'Player Impact Programme'.

The 34-year-old topped the PGA Tour's 2023 prize list, with a cool £11.9m being awarded to the Northern Irish golfer for generating the most media interest during the calendar year. That takes his reported net worth from around $170m (£134m) up to nearer £150m.

Previously, Tiger Woods, despite having endured an injury-hit 2021 and 2022, won the award during both years, with McIlroy coming second in the 2022 iteration. Woods finished second this time around.

And in doing so, the 47-year-old, who is set to make his PGA Tour return from injury later this week at the Hero World Challenge event in the Bahamas on Thursday, pocketed £9.5million for coming second on the 'Player Impact Programme'.

A total of $100m (£79.3m) was distributed amongst the top 20 players, with PGA Tour executive VP Jason Gore stating the programme is "as objective as possible."

"The scoring model for the Program is intended to be as objective as possible with the goal of quantifying the impact each player has on the PGA Tour," said Gore, who is also the PGA's chief player officer too.

Amongst the other players to receive millions from the programme were Jon Rahm (£7.1m) in third and Jordan Spieth (£5.5m) in fourth. Scottie Scheffler (£4.8m), the current world number one, rounded out the top five.
