Things got out of hand at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday as Lazio hosted Celtic in a tense Champions League encounter.

The Hoops' hopes of advancing beyond the group stage were dashed after Ciro Immobile's late double secured a 2-0 win for the hosts in Rome. And there were early signs the match would be a feisty one as supporters from both sides were seen throwing flares at one another prior to kick-off.

And the disappointing scenes continued during the match itself as bystanders were put at risk by the actions of a selfish few. It's understood members of the infamous Lazio ultras attacked first before Celtic fans responded by lobbing the pyros back where they came from.

The two fanbases clashed despite a barrier of empty seats being erected to keep the two apart. And while that may have limited any physical violence in the Italian capital, it didn't prevent the pair from launching missiles at one another.

Lazio and Celtic have a history of tensions, and Celtic were fined £13,000 after their fans let off flares prior to a 2019 Europa League win over the Eagles. And they picked up where they left off at Parkhead in October after Celtic's ultras group, The Green Brigade, unfurled a banner that read 'Antifascist Glasgow Celtic'.

The display also included an upside-down image of the late Benito Mussolini, the fascist former leader of Italy. Featured on the banner were the words ‘Lazio Vaffanculo’, which translate to 'F*** Lazio'.

UEFA is unlikely to look kindly on Tuesday's proceedings, especially after the actions of some fans put others in potential danger.

Lazio's late win put them atop Group E ahead of Atletico Madrid's meeting with Feyenoord on Tuesday evening. Celtic, meanwhile, will finish last in the pool after taking a single point from their first five fixtures
