Erik ten Hag previews Man Utd’s clash with Galatasaray in the Champions League

Newcastle players were furious after a late controversial penalty was given against them in their 1-1 draw away to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Kylian Mbappe slotted the spot-kick after Alexander Isak gave the visitors a first-half lead in France.

After Tino Livramento was adjudged to have handballed, TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist was furious at the decision that was changed by VAR to a penalty.

Referee Szymon Marciniak initially waved away PSG protests as the ball appeared to come off Livramento’s chest before hitting his arm, but when he was told to take a look at the VAR screen he soon pointed to the spot.

Mbappe lifted his penalty over Nick Pope to much relief inside the Parc des Princes, having spent almost the entirety of the second half bombarding the Newcastle defence without finding the back of the net.

TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist was one of many who were incensed by the VAR decision, branding it an “injustice” against the Premier League side. “Well Newcastle will be devastated and so will I,” McCoist said. “I think his hand is slightly away from his body and I hope I’m wrong. Normally this [the referee checking the monitor] isn’t a good sign. That’s come off his chest! No chance! No chance, no! [Penalty given] That is a shambles!

“Honestly, that’s not on. It hits his chest, goes off his left elbow. If that’s a penalty, we may as well give the game up! It’s never a penalty, we’ve been singing his praises all night. If he’s the best ref in the business, how has he given that?! There is no way that that penalty kick should be given.

“That’s not on, I feel for Eddie Howe and those players, I genuinely do. It’s bordering on robbery, it really is. They’ve worked their socks off, they’ve defended so well, Pope has been excellent and that’s a really poor decision from an official that has been excellent. I’m really devastated, the willingness to work for each other, bodies on the line, Eddie Howe should be pleased with what he’s seen tonight from his lads but I feel there’s been a serious, serious injustice at what I’ve just seen tonight.”
