Jamie Carragher has slammed Manchester United’s purchase of Casemiro as a ‘terrible’ buy as the $89million (£70m) midfielder struggles for form and fitness in his second season at the club.

The Brazilian, who has not played since November 1, has dealt with ankle and hamstring injuries this season and will turn 32 in February.

And Carragher, speaking from CBS Sports’ Destination Miami event, doesn’t believe United got good value for money signing the five-time Champions League winner.

‘When you look at Man United buying Casemiro – I don’t care how well he did last season – that’s a terrible buy, from a business and club point of view. That’s just a panic,’ Carragher said.

‘£70million on a guy who’s 30, 31 on a five-year deal, on massive money. I think he’s on the way down now… who’s going to sign him?’

Brazil midfielder Casemiro has struggled for form this season having been excellent last term

‘That’s a terrible buy, from a business and club point of view,’ Jamie Carragher said

Discussing United more broadly, Carragher said that the club has given too much free reign to managers such as Ten Hag and others who have come – and failed – before him.

‘I think the managers just have too much power,’ Carragher said, calling Sir Alex Ferguson a ‘legend’ but also a ‘one-off.’

‘I just think since then, top football clubs have top directors of football, people who run the club. And I just think they let the manager get on with it. He buys who he wants.

‘You look at Ten Hag now, basically 60-70 per cent of the players he’s bought – they’re either from the Dutch League, or he’s worked with them before. So you know he’s got an unbelievable amount of power at the club. It hasn’t worked, I think it’s the same with Jose (Mourinho), (Louis) van Gaal, other people.

‘And a manager should have an input into signings,’ he continued. ‘I’m not saying a manager should not know who they’re signing. But a manager shouldn’t be allowed to just go buy who he wants.’

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe close to buying a 25 per cent stake in the club, the billionaire is reportedly targeting former Liverpool chief Michael Edwards to oversee transfers, while Paul Mitchell has also been linked to the role.

Carragher believes United have given too much free reign to managers such as Erik Ten Hag

John Murtough currently serves as United’s football director, while signings such as Antony, Andre Onana, Lisandro Martínez and Sofyan Amrabat have all worked under Ten Hag at previous clubs (though the figure is far smaller than 60-70 percent).

Nonetheless, it has been 10 years since United last lifted the Premier League trophy, and Carragher has admittedly enjoyed that barren run a bit.

‘It’s helped me, from a TV point of view, because Man United have been awful since I’ve been doing TV. So that’s why I’m never gonna retire,’ he laughed.

‘So hopefully, that’ll continue. But I’m just thinking, ‘Why are you this bad when I retired? Why weren’t you this bad when I was playing?”

After a rocky start to the season, United are now the Premier League’s in form team with five wins from six but threw away a two-goal lead in Wednesday’s 3-3 draw at Galatasaray in the Champions League.

‘You know, football cycles… they’ll come back, it’s a great club,’ Carragher said. ‘And they’ve got a lot of money. Great history, tradition. So, Man United will be back. But certainly in the Premier League, there’s a lot of competition. A lot of competition.

‘So it’s not easy, but yeah, I just wish what we’re seeing now we were seeing maybe 10 years ago when I was playing.’
