Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs has been given a one-match ban after being accused of an X-rated rant at referee Anthony Taylor following his side’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle last month.

Gary O’Neil’s men were forced to settle for a point against the Magpies at Molineux on October 28 in a game that saw the visitors take the lead through Callum Wilson, before Mario Lemina netted an equaliser.

On the stroke of half time, Wilson had put Eddie Howe’s men ahead again from the spot in controversial circumstances after it was ruled that Hwang Hee-chan had fouled Newcastle’s Fabian Schar following a VAR review.

Wolves went on to secure a point thanks to Hee-chan’s leveller in the second half – but Hobbs was still fuming with officials and is said to have vented his frustration at referee Taylor as he left the pitch.

Taylor’s incident report from the game claims Hobbs walked past him in the tunnel area before telling him he was ‘absolutely f***ing useless as usual’, as reported by the Athletic.

Hobbs was then allegedly summoned to Taylor’s dressing room, where the referee told him his words were unacceptable.

Then after being informed that he would be reported for his comments, Hobbs is claimed to have said: ‘We look forward to your apology again,’ before walking out.

Hobbs has not disputed the charges, according to the Mirror – who claim the director told Taylor he was ‘just a fan’ when asked who he was initially.

The FA have charged Hobbs with a breach of Rule E3.1, which punishes comments ‘about match officials which imply bias, attack the officials’ integrity or which are personally offensive in nature’.

In addition to his stadium ban, Hobbs has also been slapped with a £4,000 fine.
