Lightning flashed overhead and the letters on the banner among the Galatasaray ultras – are there any other kind? – were dripping with blood. Your Nightmare is Back Again, it read.

It felt like a scene from a horror film. Not a very good one, mind, but a horror film all the same.

By the time the worst of the rain had finally stopped falling and the lightning had stopped flashing, it really did feel like Manchester United’s nightmare was back again.

Not just the infamous Welcome to Hell slogan that made a return before kick-off here 30 years after United’s players were menaced going through the airport for their first away game against Galatasaray following a 3-3 draw against the Turks at Old Trafford that was just as damaging as this one.

Not just on their last visit here in November 2020 when they were humbled by Istanbul Basaksehir, either.

Man United’s collapse against Galatasaray was like something out of a horror movie

United were given a frosty welcome with a collage reading ‘welcome to hell’ in the stands

Supporters attempted to intimidate United players after touching down in Istanbul

No, this was the night that all United’s nightmares in Europe this season came back to haunt them.

Their record across four of their five games in Group A is quite something: 4:3, 4:3, 3:2, 3:3. It reads like the menu when you’re selecting the picture ratio on your TV.

Because if United don’t end up qualifying for the knockout stage of the Champions League, it won’t just because of the events on a rain-lashed and pulsating night here in Istanbul.

It will be because of Munich when United started quite well but went off the rails after Andre Onana allowed Leroy Sane’s shot to squirm through his grasp as Erik ten Hag’s side lost 4-3 in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as it sounds.

It will because of the 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray at Old Trafford when United twice led but fell to Mauro Icardi’s late goal.

All of Erik ten Hag’s nightmares became a reality as United fell apart despite a two-goal lead

Andre Onana made two clangers in Instanbul as he was beaten by two Hakim Ziyech free kicks

The Cameroonian has had an inconsistent start to his United career since joinin from Inter

It will be because of the barmy 4-3 defeat to FC Copenhagen when they scored two early goals – as they did here at the Rams Stadium on Wednesday – but still contrived to lose the tie.

Even the 1-0 win over the Danes at Old Trafford required a penalty save from Onana deep into injury-time.

The Cameroon keeper redeemed himself that night and has improved steadily since, but this was a return to the shaky, unpredictable Onana as he was beaten by two free kicks Hakim Ziyech.

The bottom line is that you cannot concede 14 goals across four games in Europe and expect to progress.

United’s game management has been poor from the start. Too often, they have fallen apart at key moments in games. One goal quickly becomes two.

Manchester United cannot expect to progress in Europe after conceding 14 in four games

‘I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a game like that,’ former United midfielder Paul Scholes TNT Sports. ‘There was a lack of discipline. It’s very difficult to win games like that away from home. That’s just not the way to win games away in Europe. You’re 2-0 up, 3-1 up, just relax.

‘It doesn’t feel like a team to me. They don’t play like a team. Nothing is changing, they’re not doing anything to stop it.’

His former United teammate Owen Hargreaves agreed. ‘They were in control of the game. They scored three in Munich and lost, they scored three in Copenhagen and lost, they scored three here and drew. They’re scoring the goals but they’re conceding soft goals. You can’t do that in Europe.’

The biggest shame of all is that United came so close to securing a statement win here. This could have been the night Ten Hag’s side came through one of the ultimate tests of character in the Galatasaray cauldron. There was a cacophony of noise every time the Turks attacked and piercing whistles when United had the ball.

They came as close as you can to silencing the Rams Stadium with two early goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, and again when Scott McTominay made it 3-1.

It is a true shame that United could not come through one of the ultimate tests of character in the Galatasaray cauldron – which created a cacophony of noise with every attack

United are well aware what the consequences of this result could mean as they came up short

United weren’t afraid to slow down play or go to ground in search of a free kick, as Galatasaray did 30 years when frustrating Sir Alex Ferguson’s team in a goalless draw that saw them advance to the last eight at United’s expense.

But just when it looked as though United had done enough to get over the line, their old frailties returned and Galatasaray were back in the game.

Even then, they had chances to win it at the end. Facundo Pellistri should have taken the second of his two chances but was denied by a wonderful save from Fernando Muslera. McTominay fired wide, Fernandes hit the post.

When the final whistle sounded on a hugely entertaining game, Antony collapsed to the turf and McTominay rolled onto his back in exhaustion and frustration.

They knew what the consequences of this result might well be. They knew United had come up short again. It has been the story of their season in Europe.
