Bayern Munich’s game with Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon has been postponed due to heavy snowfall.

The Bundesliga clash – which pitted second place Bayern against bottom of the table Union – had been due to kick off at 2:30PM (GMT) at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

However, heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures resulted in the match being called off.

Local transport had also been cancelled due to the inclement weather – including trains in and out of Munich – while the decision was taken by authorities to suspend flights until at least 12PM.

Temperatures are expected to drop to as low as -13 degrees over the weekend with snow falling throughout Friday night and into Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel’s side – who had trained in snowy conditions on Friday – currently sit second in the league, two points behind surprise table-toppers Bayer Leverkusen.

They remain unbeaten with 10 wins and two draws, but the postponement will allow Leverkusen to potentially extend their lead at the top when they host Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

Meanwhile, after a fairytale run that took them from the Bundesliga 2 to the Champions League over recent years, Union have endured a torrid campaign.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are just two points behind surprise table-toppers Bayer Leverkusen

With nine defeats from their first 11 league games, they split with long-term boss Urs Fischer last month.

They have also been eliminated from the Champions League after failing to win any of their five group matches.

Despite their dismal start, they remain just two points off safety and last week appointed former Lech Poznan, Dinamo Zagreb and Trabzonspor boss Nenad Bjelica as their new manager.

Four other Bundesliga games are set to take place on Saturday and they remain on as it stands.
