Alfreton Town were forced to postpone their FA Cup clash against Walsall on Saturday due to a frozen pitch just five minutes before kick-off.

The National League North side were due to have their second round game broadcast on BBC but like many other games up and down the country, it fell victim to the freezing temperatures.

Saturday’s proposed 12:30pm kick-off saw the plug pulled just minutes before kick-off, a post from Alfreton on social media read: "Despite our best efforts unfortunately the match officials have called the match off. Apologies to those that have travelled. We will provide further updates when we have them."

The FA Cup fixture joins a growing list of postponements across the football pyramid in England and Scotland, with the TV slot changed to ironically show an episode of ‘Money for Nothing' on BBC One instead.

In an interview with the club’s media, Alfreton manager Billy Heath believes the game could’ve gone ahead, he said: “I think it (the pitch) was playable. That’s not a criticism of the referee, that’s not because I think it’s playable, it’s irrelevant. It’s what the referee deems as playable, I thought the game could’ve gone ahead.”
