Paul Gascoigne earned widespread attention for reenacting the infamous dentist’s chair at Euro 96, but there are some off-field moments best not turned into celebrations.

That’s after Gennaro Gattuso revealed how Gascoigne welcomed him to Rangers in 1997, soiling his team-mate’s socks before he went on to become the World Cup winner of today.

Italy great Gattuso had only a couple of seasons of senior football under his belt before he left Perugia for Glasgow, brought to Ibrox towards the end of Walter Smith’s first stint in charge of the club.

The midfield anchor was only 19 at the time, but he nonetheless received a harsh introduction to his new surroundings after starting fresh in Scotland.

Gattuso told 2AngryMenTV: “During my first day in Glasgow, Gascoigne s*** in my socks.

"He did it when I went into the shower. I came back and there was a foul stench.

"He came up with something every day.”

Thankfully it wasn’t his team-mate’s shenanigans that pushed Gattuso towards the Ibrox exit, but instead a change of position to right-back after Dick Advocaat replaced Smith at the helm.

‘Gazza’ garnered a reputation for attracting controversy throughout his career, and it didn’t take Gattuso long to learn first-hand of his team-mate’s penchant for pranks.

The former Tottenham and Lazio star wouldn’t have thought twice about hazing the new signing towards the end of the 20th century, though the same antics would likely be ill-received in 2021.

Gascoigne was seen on the Italian version of ‘I’m a Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here’ earlier this year and looked to be in promising condition during a recent holiday.

Gattuso left Rangers and returned to Italy in 1998, going on to lift two Serie A title, two Champions League and the 2006 World Cup during his 13-year career with AC Milan.

The 43-year-old went on to coach the Rossoneri and departed Napoli earlier in May, but Gattuso will be back in Italy’s top flight next term after agreeing to join Fiorentina.
