Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has raised fears that Joel Matip could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after he limped out of the team’s 4-3 win against Fulham on Sunday.

The centre back clutched his right knee midway through the second half at Anfield and was swiftly replaced by Ibrahima Konate.

Klopp admitted after the match that it was unlikely to be a ‘short one’ when responding to Matip’s potential lay-off, and he failed to give a more positive update on Tuesday ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Sheffield United tomorrow.

‘It doesn’t look good,’ Klopp said. ‘The scan is not done yet. We don’t know how long.’

Diogo Jota and Alisson both picked up injuries in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Manchester City, but Klopp suggested they are closing in on returning to the squad.

‘(Jota) was running yesterday, outside. Everything is going in the right direction but he is not in team training,’ Klopp added.

‘Alisson is closer but will not be involved tomorrow.’

In Alisson’s absence, Liverpool back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher had a difficult game against Fulham as he conceded three times.

Klopp refused to blame Kelleher, though, and insisted he has no doubts about the shot-stopper’s quality.

‘I think he played a really good game [against Fulham] but then we concede two goals,’ he said.

‘The Harry Wilson one was an unlucky one. The second one, our goalkeeping coach and Ali said, we are front-footed goalkeepers. These kind of things happen, it’s nothing to do with quality, it’s a philosophy thing.’
