Liverpool have suffered a huge blow to their plans to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz this year. The highly-rated attacking midfielder is reportedly set to stay put at the BayArena until at least 2025, according to his father.

Multiple reports suggested that Leverkusen were resigned to selling the 20-year-old at the end of this season with Liverpool among the frontrunners to snap him up as a replacement for Roberto Firmino.

However, Wirtz’s dad Hans-Joachim recently put an end to those hopes by telling Sky Sports Germany: “Currently, everything is geared towards Florian continuing to play in Leverkusen next season.“

To add further insult to injury, the report goes on to claim that Wirtz is far keener on a move to Bayern Munich. The Bavarian giants are said to be long-time admirers of the 20-year-old, who has been among the best players in the Bundesliga this season.

But Wirtz appears to be committed to Leverkusen until at least the end of the season although he didn’t completely rule out a move. “We have played a good season until now with Bayer Leverkusen, it is fun to play in this team. That is the reason I am only thinking about Leverkusen,” he said at the start of the 2023/2024 campaign.

If Wirtz does secure a move to Bayern then it would beg the question as to where he would be deployed. Jamal Musiala, who plays in Wirtz’s natural position, is undroppable at this point while Thomas Muller is still an option as a No 10.
