Football fans have branded the Saudi Pro League as a farce after a player conceded a penalty for trying to high five his keeper.

Al Hazm and Al Fateh clashed at the Al Hazm Club Stadium on Thursday, with the home team running out 2-0 winners. But their second goal couldn't have come in a stranger fashion when Al Fateh defender Fahad Al Harbi went to congratulate his keeper.

Al Harbi jogged back to offer his keeper a high five, but he accidentally slapped the ball out of the keeper's hand. And the referee had no option but to point to the spot.

"And y'all expect me to take this league seriously," one fan responded to a clip of the video. While a second responded: "How's that even a penalty to start with?"

"Farmers league for a reason," a third said. However, another added he wasn't surprised it was given: "I don't understand why people are so surprised. It's just part of the game, get over it!"

There was again a small attendance for their clash on Thursday evening, as the low attendances continue to plague the league. The official attendance at the 8,000-capacity Al-Hazm Club Stadium was just 640.

To put that into context, seven clubs in the Northern Premier League – the seventh tier of English football – boast bigger average attendances, including the likes of Marine, Workington and Ilkeston.

However, 640 is far from the lowest Saudi Pro League attendance so far this season. Recently, just 264 supporters showed up for the 0-0 draw between Al-Riyadh and Al-Hazm.

The match was played at Al-Riyadh’s 22,188-seater stadium. In September, another Al-Riyadh home game, a 1-0 defeat to Al-Okhdood, saw just 133 fans turn up.
