Cristian Romero somehow escaped a red card after stamping on Newcastle’s Callum Wilson.

Tottenham cruised to a 4-1 victory at home over the Magpies on Sunday night. Destiny Udogie opened the scoring for Spurs and Richarlison netted two either side of half-time.

Son Heung-min made it four from the penalty spot in the 85th minute, while Joelinton’s stoppage time goal was nothing more than a consolation. But with the north Londoners in control, defender Romero’s moment of madness in the 80th minute almost caused his side unnecessary problems.

The central defender’s ferocious challenge caught Wilson on the Achilles while his left leg hacked down the forward.

Romero’s awful tackle may have been met with a red card on another day, but the 25-year-old World Cup winner was spared his marching orders by VAR, which didn't deem it any more than a yellow card.

And fans of both clubs took to social media immediately after to voice their shock at the needless challenge by Romero, who risked a suspension despite the game virtually being played at walking pace and his side all but assured a victory.

Sky Sports is bringing you 500 live football games to watch, as well access to Cricket, Golf, F1, Boxing, NFL, NBA and more across eight dedicated channels.
