Fikayo Tomori was praised by Ally McCoist for making a ‘ridiculous tackle’ to deny Newcastle forward Miguel Almiron the evening’s opening goal against AC Milan in Wednesday’s Champions League clash.

The England international arrived at St James’ Park with a point to prove with Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate in attendance at the ground, and demonstrated brilliant last-ditch defending in the first half.

Almiron looked set to open the scoring as a pass into the box found him staring into an open net and needing just the slightest of touches to prod the ball over the line.

However, Tomori refused to give up on what looked like a lost cause as he slid in and somehow wrapped the outside of his foot around the ball to clear the danger.

Replays showed that Almiron should have gone with his right-foot rather than waiting for the ball to drift onto his preferred left and McCoist heaped praise on the 25-year-old after the tackle.
