Liverpool supporters have furiously claimed that Union Saint-Gilloise’s first goal against the Reds in Thursday’s Europa League encounter was offside.

Jurgen Klopp’s side went a goal down in their final group stage encounter of the second-tier European competition after opposition striker Mohamed Amoura put the hosts in front.

The goal was given as the Belgian side took the lead against the run of play, but Liverpool fans aren’t happy as they believe replays showed the striker was offside.

Amoura ran through on goal before finishing past second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and appeared to be offside in the build-up as he ran through the middle of defenders Jarell Amorin Quansah and Ibrahima Konate.

The pass from Amoura’s strike partner Gustaf Nilsson played the 23-year-old through on goal, but snapshots seemingly show him already ahead of Liverpool defender Quansah and Konate when the pass was made.

One Liverpool supporter fumed: ‘Offside surely?’ before going on to add; ‘come on, it’s like a tiny fraction of a second. Zoom in and you’ll see the white of the ball still close to his foot.’

Another added: ‘Blatant cheating he’s so far offside,’ in response to the questionable goal being allowed to stand.

VAR didn’t review the incident as Union Saint-Gilloise opened the scoring before Liverpool defender, Quansah, equalised with his first goal for the club minutes later.

The home side then retook the lead for the second time in the match on the stroke of half time as Cameron Puertas scored the third goal of the first half.

Other Reds fans echoed their frustrations as another added: ‘Sorry to labour the point but a better screenshot doesn’t make it any more onside, does it? Ha.’

Another similar comment posted online read: ‘Clear as day offside. Doesn’t matter because of the occasion but yet again we get zero replays for a reason.’
