‘The 7-0 was a freak result!’ | Jurgen Klopp previews Liverpool’s clash with Man Utd

Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has revealed that he was willing to sacrifice a year of his salary to trial Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield. The England international has since thrived in the more central role, which has played an important role in the Reds’ success so far this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are sitting top of the Premier League after winning 11 of their opening 16 fixtures. Liverpool’s midfield rebuild has been central to their impressive start to the campaign, with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister hitting the ground running at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold has also thrived since being deployed in midfield, with his new role granting him permission to make use of his impressive passing range and benefit from his desire to make an impact in the final third.

The England international has scored two goals and made two assists in 14 appearances as a result, and Reds assistant Lijnders has revealed that he is to thank for that. He told The Mirror: “The moment we found balance in our team was when we put Trent inside.

“His attitude, his passion, his unpredictability, his development as a leader. There are more players like him in the academy but there are not many as tenacious as him. That makes him the best, the passion, the love for the game, the passion for winning. He comes from a lovely family as well. He is a wonderful guy and an incredible player.”
