Chelsea supporters have hailed Djordje Petrovic after his supposed mind-games during their Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Newcastle on penalties.

The two sides faced off in the last eight of the competition at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, with the Blues desperate for silverware after a mixed start to Mauricio Pochettino’s time at the club, while the Magpies were keen to go one better after losing to Man United in the final last season.

Callum Wilson put Newcastle ahead in the first half after a mistake from Benoit Badiashile and it looked as if that would be enough for the victory.

However, Mykhailo Mudryk seized upon an error from Kieran Trippier in injury time to level the game before the Blues won 4-2 on penalties after Petrovic saved Matt Ritchie’s decisive spot kick.

The Serbian keeper was making just his second start for the club since his £14m move from New England Revolution in the summer, with No 1 Robert Sanchez out with a knee injury he picked up against Everton earlier this month.

As the winger began his run-up, Petrovic was spotted pointing to his right as if to indicate he knew the Newcastle man was going to go that way.

Instead, Ritchie fired his effort high to Petrovic’s left, with the 24-year-old pulling off a stunning save to secure a breakthrough moment at his new club.

It backed up his impressive career record from 12 yards, with Petrovic having saved five of the 16 penalties he had faced during his time in the MLS.

And, following his stop, Chelsea fans were quick to laud their stand-in goalkeeper as one said: ‘We cooked Them. Petrovic mind games are out of the world.’

Another added: ‘Petrovic with the mind games and the save. This is Chelsea new #1.’
