Roy Keane has doubled down on his criticism of Virgil van Dijk after he slammed Manchester United’s tactics against Liverpool.

Liverpool captain Van Dijk had hit out at Man United following the 0-0 stalemate at Anfield last Sunday, suggesting the Red Devils had set out to secure a bore draw.

‘How we played the game, having most of the ball, there was only one team that was trying to win the game, unfortunately it didn’t happen,’ said Van Dijk. ‘We were superior in all aspects. They are buzzing with a point and we are disappointed.’

Van Dijk’s comments came after Liverpool had been unable to find a breakthrough despite having 34 shots during the match.

Former Man United captain Keane accused Van Dijk of being ‘arrogant’ and ‘disrespectful’ in his post-match remarks on Sky Sports.

Keane maintains Van Dijk was wrong to hit out at Man United’s tactics, claiming survival was the ‘name of the game’ for Erik ten Hag’s under-fire side at Anfield.

‘I saw Crystal Palace go to Manchester City – Crystal Palace are no Manchester United, and you should see the way they were set up, and we all praised Roy Hodgson and they managed to get a draw,’ Keane told the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.

‘I didn’t see anyone from City criticising Crystal Palace.

‘The fact they scored in the game might be slightly different, but I think when you’re going into certain games, survival is the name of the game – Man United will take the point.

‘I didn’t see United after the game having over the top celebrations as if they were delighted to get away with a point – they would’ve taken it before the game.

‘Every one of us before the game said we all fancy Liverpool.

‘He [Virgil van Dijk] is entitled to his opinion as well, he’s entitled to maybe get something wrong. I’ve said things after games when I was at United and thought that it was a bit over the top, but that was generally against my own team.

‘I don’t think ever in my career I criticised a team for the way they played, because every team must find [something] different.

‘You have to admire that’s part of the game as well.’
