Manchester United chiefs are reportedly divided on Mason Greenwood’s future, as some believe that the loaned-out forward could eventually be welcomed back into the fold at Old Trafford. But La Liga giants Real Madrid are convinced that a return to England is off the cards, which could work to their advantage in the summer.

Greenwood spent well over a year out of the spotlight while dealing with a string of off-field allegations. The case against him was thrown out earlier this year, but United decided that allowing him back into the first team would pose too many complications.

A season-long loan to Getafe commenced in the summer, and Greenwood has wasted no time slipping back into a productive rhythm, notching five goals and four assists across all competitions so far this campaign.

Questions persist surrounding how United will deal with the situation at the end of the season. According to TEAMtalk, some senior figures at Old Trafford are reluctant to cut ties with Greenwood permanently.

But others are believed to be wary of how backtracking on their stance could affect sections of the fanbase and the women’s team. Real and their local rivals, Atletico Madrid, are reportedly keeping a close eye on proceedings with a view to capitalising in the summer transfer window.

Getafe are thought to be interested in signing Greenwood on a permanent basis, but only Europe’s wealthiest sides would be able to match the lucrative pay packet he picks up with the Red Devils.

The 22-year-old is entering the final 18 months of his contract, which opens up the possibility of a cut-price transfer deal in 2024. Greenwood graduated from United’s academy as a teenager before racking up 35 goals in 129 senior appearances.

If Getafe are priced out of a move for the youngster, they will at least receive a form of consolation. Reports indicate that a sell-on clause was negotiated with United which would land the Spanish side with 20 per cent of the transfer fee if Greenwood moves permanently next year.

The Red Devils set out their stall back in August by releasing a statement, part of which read: “Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.

“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”
