Boxing legends with combined age of 114 face off as fans slam ‘disturbing’ fight

Boxing fans were left "disturbed" after two fighters with a combined age of 114 bashed lumps out of each other in the ring.

The world of combat sports has often been left disillusioned by a wide variety of fights over the last few years. However, few have dropped jaws, for all the wrong reasons, more so than a bout in Jamaica which took place between two former icons. James Toney faced Donnovan ‘Razor’ Ruddock in a brutal six-round contest in Kingston.

It was a fight that initially brought excitement to supporters who watched both of them in their pomp in the 1990s and early 2000s. Instead of bringing back memories from the past, it left all viewers and those who bought tickets feeling father uncomfortable.

Toney is 55-years-old and has not fought professionally since his final bout against Mike Sheppard in 2017, where he departed the sport with a record of 77-10-3.

Meanwhile, Ruddock had last strapped on a pair of gloves for a sanctioned fight all the way back in 2015, when he was knocked out by Dillon Carman. To give you an idea of how far past his best Ruddock is, he is best remembered for fighting Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson.

The sight of the two veterans, who were both far from fighting shape, taking punch after punch from each other did not resonate well with their audience.

“James Toney (age 55) vs Razor Ruddock (59) just did a six-round fight last night. If you’ve heard these guys speak you’ll agree it’s absolutely disgusting they are doing this. The people around them should be ashamed. So sad to see how much these achieved & now need to do this,” said one furious boxing fan.

British boxing legend and former WBC cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew also commented: “Sad, sad situation.” Another frustrated boxing lover said: “People will say ‘but they were fine after’. The damage has been done and this will no doubt at least knock a few years off their lives. Ridiculous.”

At his best, Toney was a three-weight world champion who terrified anybody who stepped into the ring with him. He also competed in a single MMA bout in the UFC, which he lost via submission to Randy Couture.
