Sebastian Vettel convinced he could stop Max Verstappen from making F1 ‘boring’

Sebastian Vettel believes that he would have a chance of beating Max Verstappen in equal machinery at the moment despite the fact that the Dutch driver is dominating the rest of his rivals at the moment.

The legendary German made his return to the F1 paddock at the Japanese Grand Prix, marking just his second appearance at a race this season after retiring from the sport at the end of the 2022 campaign after two seasons with midfield strugglers Aston Martin.

Vettel and Verstappen are the two most successful drivers in Red Bull’s history with the former securing four consecutive World Championships before departing for Ferrari and the latter on track to secure his third in a row at the Qatar Grand Prix in two weeks.

Speaking about his chance of matching Verstappen in equal machinery, Vettel told Channel 4: “Not like that, because that’s how good he is, and that’s just not how it works for any one of us. But, of course, I believe in what I can and know what I can do and maybe what I can’t do.

“I think I’m very different to him, but I mean, obviously, I’m convinced that everybody is beatable. But it is a big commitment. I know also the way I like to do the sport is a huge commitment, and if I do something, I want to do it properly.

“So I wouldn’t be able to beat him just turning up and dropping my bag in the room, getting my kit on and ‘let’s have a go’. I don’t think that’s how it works.”

Vettel also offered some words on the 25-year-old’s current domination. Verstappen has won 13 of the 16 Grands Prix this season and all but one since Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez took his second and final win of the campaign in Azerbaijan.

“Max is amazing,” he explained. “I think it’s great to watch. Obviously, it will be very, very, very, very difficult to repeat. I get it, it’s boring to watch if the same guy wins again, but you’ve got to be impressed by the excellence.”

Verstappen’s comfortable victory at Suzuka on Sunday clinched the Constructors’ Championship for Red Bull, marking the sixth triumph in the team’s history, and the Dutch sensation will now go after his personal accolade when the lights go out at Losail.
