Ajax star sent off for ‘winning the ball’ as fans cry ‘no one can operate VAR’

Ajax fans have been left up in arms after Steven Berghuis was given his marching orders on during the Dutch side's Europa League clash with Marseille.

The Dutchman lunged in at Joaquin Correa early in the second half, winning the ball. However, Correa made a meal of the challenge, going down clutching his right foot.

VAR had a look at the challenge, and decided to send off the Dutchman despite winning the ball. One possible explanation could be the scissor motion Berghuis used in the challenge, which referees across the globe are trying to stamp out.

"Just look at that first replay. Harsh and definitely a yellow, but how is this a red," a third responded. And another added: "How is that a red card on Berghuis? I’m confused he touches the ball then the momentum makes him take out the player!"

Berghuis couldn't quite believe the decision either, and he fumed in the media zone: "It's not a red card. In fact I just watched it back, it might not even be a yellow."
