Football fans have reacted after Joey Barton’s controversial appearance on TalkTV to speak to Piers Morgan about his opinion on female commentators and pundits.
Barton launched a misogynistic rant on social media on Wednesday evening, claiming women ‘shouldn’t be talking about the men’s game’ and that men who listen to them ‘need their heads testing’.
He continued to share sexist posts on Thursday, while he also claimed women are only getting jobs in men’s football because TV companies have ‘quotas to fill and boxes to tick’.
When appearing on Piers Morgan Uncensored, he doubled down on his views and claimed the ‘woke agenda’ was responsible for female pundits, before he added he ‘can’t take a thing they say seriously in the men’s arena’. He also highlighted how it is ‘ruining the experience for most men’.
After his comments to Morgan, several people on social media lambasted Barton.

One said: ‘He literally contradicts himself and the sensitive men in the comments say he’s spot on. Jesus wept.’
Another added: ‘What right does Barton have to speak about the state of football punditry? Having never been an elite pundit himself? Surely we should be listening to the opinions of those more qualified, by his own logic?’
More supporters piled in as one said: ‘Name checks Mark Chapman, who’s never played the game but earned the right to present & talk about it through hard work. Then goes on to say women who’ve played the game their whole lives, who live & breathe it, can’t talk about it because they never played at mens level?!’
A further social media user followed up on this contradictory claims as they added: ‘Love how he contradicts himself in first 30 seconds.’
One other said: ‘So what’s the difference between a MALE commentator that hasn’t played the elite level and a female that hasn’t played the elite men’s level? Had a stinker there. Football’s for everyone.’
However, there were some users who agreed with Barton’s comments and backed up his stance on female commentators and pundits.
One said: ‘He’s not wrong,’ before another added: ‘Agree!!! I can’t sit there and listen to their half time analysis.’
Meanwhile, a further supporter also felt the former QPR and Man City midfielder was talking sense as they said: ‘I don’t particularly like Joey but on this I thought he was absolutely bang on! It should always be about who’s the best not about ticking boxes as it’s ruining the football experience for most.’

However, there were others who agreed with Barton’s comments and backed up his stance
The whole controversy had begun when Barton – who is currently unemployed after being sacked by Bristol Rovers in October – seemingly took offence to the number of female presenters and commentators on Amazon Prime’s coverage of the Premier League this week.
Some of the highly-experienced broadcasters who were working included the likes of Eni Aluko, Siobhan Chamberlain, Gabby Logan and Robyn Cowen.
On Wednesday, Barton first posted on X, formerly Twitter: ‘Women shouldn’t be talking with any kind of authority in the men’s game. Come on. Let’s be serious.
‘It’s a completely different game. If you don’t accept that. We will always see things differently.
‘The women’s game is thriving. Fantastic to see. I cannot take a thing they say serious in the men’s arena #namaste.’
Just seven minutes later, he then added: ‘Any man who listens to Women commentary or co-comms needs their heads testing… #sticktoyourowngame.’
He continued his tirade on Thursday as he sparked fresh controversy by hitting out at his former club City for having a female presenter for their men’s matches.
Barton posted a video on social media of the presenter setting the scene ahead of the team’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig last week.
Having been irked by the 14-second clip for some reason, Barton wrote alongside it: ‘I mean look at the nonsense. You give them a f***ing inch… Was going to use the hashtag #Getthemout but no doubt it will be taken out of context…

‘Out the stadiums and off the concourses with the influencer f***ing nonsense. Men surely, enough’s enough? Someone got to say something or it won’t ever end.’
He proceeded to post another message to highlight his view that women are not being given jobs in men’s football on merit.
‘Of course loads of ex-top players can’t get a gig because the TV Companies have quotas to fill and boxes to tick,’ he added.
‘Their experience thrown on the landfill to accommodate the ‘Woke’. Only way they will change if it hits them in the pocket.
‘That only Happens When the men decide to switch off. Millions mute the TV’s and that’s for some of the Men.
‘TV must be going out the window if you get a double dose of XX on the comms team for your next big match.’
Barton’s posts come after he had previously thrown his support behind the #HERGAMETOO initiative.

This is a campaign which aims to fight against sexism in sport, with Barton posing with a promotional card for the cause when he was Bristol Rovers manager.
Back in October, he also generated controversy after sharing his apparent backing for former Newcastle and England manager Kevin Keegan’s comments that he doesn’t enjoy female footballers talking about men’s football.
At a live event in Bristol, Keegan had said: ‘(I don’t like) listening to ladies talking about the England men’s team at the match because I don’t think it’s the same experience. I have a problem with that.’
In response to that, Barton had posted on X: ‘Kevin Keegan. Ballon D’or winner 1978. England manager. He’s bang on.’
