Fans spot Marco Silva’s ‘funny’ reaction to Raul Jimenez ‘kung-fu’ kick red card

Let nobody say Marco Silva doesn't know how to take bad news on the chin.

Fulham saw their recent relentless streak come to an end with a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday. And it was something of a miracle the visitors didn't lose by more after Raul Jimenez saw red 22 minutes into the game.

The Mexican was given his marching orders after a reckless 'kung-fu kick' attempt on Sean Longstaff, leaping into the Magpies midfielder at high speed. Referee Samuel Barrott originally raised a yellow for the challenge before a consultation with the VAR saw it upgraded to a red.

And despite the dire nature of the early dismissal, Silva seemingly saw the funny side. Or at the very least the Portuguese tactician had reached his wit's end judging by his immediate reaction.

Cameras caught the Cottagers coach chuckling to himself on the sidelines after Barrott changed the colour of his card. Much to the entertainment of those who spotted the response.

Did Raul Jimenez deserve a red for his 'kung-fu kick'? Let us know in the comments section below.

"That is exactly the right reaction, it's almost comical," replied one viewer bemused that Jimenez had been sent off. "He’s so funny," commented a second spectator.

Social media users queued up to praise former Everton boss Silva's "brilliant" facial expression, but others were quick to argue he had no case to defend. Some even went so far as to suggest Jimenez's attempted block "belonged in MMA" rather than football.

Certain supporters also felt aggrieved the ex-Wolves striker was sent packing after an elbowing incident with Jamaal Lascelles earlier in the match. Jimenez collapsed in a pile after a wayward arm from the Newcastle defender made contact with his face.

However, that went unpunished prior to the player receiving a red of his own despite any effort to pull out of his challenge on Longstaff. At least his manager can see the funny side of the fact Jimenez has all but certainly played his last minutes of 2023.
